Reliance Jio announced on March 12 that it has signed a deal with SpaceX to introduce Starlink’s internet services to India, a move that follows Bharti Airtel’s similar agreement just a day earlier. This collaboration will allow Jio to provide Starlink solutions through its retail outlets and online platforms, making Starlink equipment available in physical stores, while also establishing a support system for customer installation and activation.
Jio Partners with SpaceX to Bring Starlink Internet Services to India, Following Bharti Airtel’s Move
The deal is contingent on SpaceX receiving the necessary authorization to offer Starlink services in India. If approved, the partnership will help Jio and SpaceX explore ways to enhance Jio’s services while complementing SpaceX’s direct offerings to both consumers and businesses across the country. The collaboration will combine Jio’s massive mobile data traffic footprint with Starlink’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation to deliver reliable broadband services, particularly in India’s most rural and remote areas.
“Ensuring every Indian, no matter where they live, has access to affordable and high-speed broadband is Jio’s priority. Our partnership with SpaceX to bring Starlink to India represents a significant step toward seamless broadband connectivity nationwide,” said Mathew Oommen, Group CEO of Reliance Jio.
Jio’s ongoing commitment to expanding internet accessibility will also be bolstered by Starlink’s services, which are expected to complement JioAirFiber and JioFiber, offering fast and affordable internet even in the most challenging locations.
Bharti Airtel’s Move and the Jio-Starlink Partnership
The announcement comes just after Bharti Airtel entered a similar deal with SpaceX to bring Starlink’s services to India. This has sparked interest in the market, including the performance of Bharti Airtel’s share price, which saw fluctuations following the news. Bharti Airtel’s stock movements remain closely watched by investors, as both companies look to revolutionize India’s broadband market.
Jio, with its strong retail presence and online platforms, is expected to leverage its position as the largest mobile operator globally in terms of data traffic. By integrating Starlink into its broadband ecosystem, Jio aims to enhance the reach and reliability of high-speed internet services, benefiting communities and businesses across India.
Starlink and Regulatory Hurdles in India
Despite the promising partnership, regulatory approvals remain a significant challenge for Starlink’s launch in India. The Indian space regulator, IN-SPACe, and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) have yet to authorize SpaceX to begin operations. This delay follows reports that Starlink has agreed to meet the Indian government’s data localization and security requirements, which had previously been a point of contention.
The growing interest in satellite internet solutions comes as SpaceX continues to expand its global presence with over 6,000 LEO satellites. Meanwhile, other players like Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio’s joint venture with SES have already secured GMPCS licenses and IN-SPACe approvals.
A Digital Revolution in India’s Connectivity
India’s space economy is projected to grow significantly in the coming years, with IN-SPACe forecasting it could reach $44 billion by 2033. This growth aligns with India’s push to capture 8% of the global space market share, up from its current 2%. As the market develops, both Jio and Bharti Airtel are positioning themselves to be at the forefront of India’s broadband revolution.
While Bharti Airtel’s share and Jio Starlink developments have created ripples in the market, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is expected to release the satellite communication spectrum pricing structure soon, which could play a pivotal role in the next phase of India’s digital transformation.
Jio and SpaceX’s partnership, along with Bharti Airtel’s moves, sets the stage for a new era of connectivity in India, offering hope for better internet services across the country’s diverse landscape.
